How to Make Your Lipstick Last Longer

I always felt that if I wanted to be a ‘lipstick’ person that I REALLY had to commit. Making your lipstick last longer has always been a challenge. Between talking, eating, and sipping-I am constantly moving my mouth (keep it clean people), and never thought I could pull off wearing lipstick without bringing my ‘after’ kit….as in after-eating, after-talking, after-drinking. The products that add extra weight to your bag and prevent you from just rocking your cute little clutch. However I’ve recently starting wearing lipstick again-and more often. I wanted to share with you the products I use to make my lipstick last longer – I won’t say that you don’t still need to bring your touch-up bag, but it will be a bit lighter.

Lip scrub/exfoliant-this is (in my opinion) the BEST way to prep the lips to make your lipstick last longer. Use the scrub to remove any dead skin/flakes. My other ‘pro-tip’-make sure you completely remove the scrub/exfoliant so you don’t have the granules ‘hanging out’ on your lips. You need a smooth surface to work on!

My pick: Maui Sugar Lip Scrub with Kukui Nut Oil by Hanalei Beauty Company

Maui Sugar Lip Scrub with Kukui Nut Oil by Hanalei Beauty Company (Cruelty-free) Net

About the Product:

Contains natural ingredients sourced from Hawaii (Kukui Nut Oil, Sugar)

  • Helps to gently exfoliate the lips of dead skin.
  • Paraben-free, Phthalate and Sulfate free. Cruelty-free

Lip balm-but only if you have time! Honestly having moisturized lips is a beautiful thing-feels great AND looks great. Apply a light balm that’s not too waxy and wait 15-20 minutes for it to absorb. Blot lightly with tissue.

My pick: Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Moisturizing Lip Balm

Burt's Bees 100% Natural Moisturizing Lip Balm

About the Product

  • Infused with Beeswax, a natural skin conditioner, and Vitamins E to moisturize
  • Soothing Moisturizing Lip Balm to moisturize, nourish and hydrate dry lips
  • Natural lip balm made with 100% natural ingredients
  • No parabens, phthalates, petrolatum or SLS

Lip primer-again not totally necessary but a ‘good to have’ in most cases- just like eyes and face, lips can use a smooth surface that’s clean and ready for product. In a pinch? I actually use a small amount of concealer and/or foundation as your primer.

My pick (because I do NOT like this as a concealer and don’t want to waste it): Physicians Formula Instaready Full Coverage SPF 30 Concealer

Physicians Formula Instaready Full Coverage SPF 30 Concealer

Lip liner-There are several different schools of thought on this. Some experts say to match your liner to your lipstick-and I’d agree with that if you are wearing a strong red or bright pink. With my ‘everyday’ lipstick which is slightly more neutral (and fairly ‘tame’ considering my personality), I choose a liner that slightly and I mean SLIGHTLY lighter than the lipstick I plan to wear. My liner of choice is a standard you-have-to-sharpen-it pencil or the self sharpening twist up liners.   Make sure the tip is sharp-as precision is the name of the game here. I warm the liner by drawing on my hand so that it will glide on. I draw an ‘x’ on my cupid’s bow to start (unless I am filling in my lips with the liner-then do NOT do that) and then line my natural lips, using short strokes.

My pick: Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner

Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner Eastend Snob

About the Product

  • Soft textured
  • Fine tipped
  • Automatic lip liner

Liquid lipstick– I know, I know-liquid lipsticks still make some people cringe. Honestly they’ve come a long way since the originals that would crack and dry your lips to the point that you want to cover yourself in Vaseline. Believe me when I say there IS a liquid lipstick ‘out there’ for everyone. If you are not keen on liquid lipstick, then I recommend a demi-matte or semi-matte formula with long-wearing properties. Applying a liquid lipstick can be tricky and requires practice but technique comes with time and heck, if I can do it, so can you! I start with my lower lip, and once that’s done I press my lips together. Then I move on to the upper lip.   Usually one application (of liquid lipstick) is enough but if you want to apply a 2nd layer, work quickly.

My pick-liquid lipstick: Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick

Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick - RiotAbout the Product

  • Bold and Opaque
  • Cruelty free & Vegan
  • Long lasting lipstick

BECAUSE I KNOW SOMEONE WILL HATE ON ME FOR CHOOSING LIME CRIME, MY ALTERNATE LIQUID LIPSTICK PICK IS: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick

Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick

About the Product

  • One step food-proof lipcolor – No topcoat needed
  • Locks in color and comfort for up to 12 hours
  • Unique complex of silicones and moisturizers provides easy application and all day comfort.
  • Shiny minerals (micas and pearls) provide soft satin finish

My pick-demi/semi-matte: CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick

COVERGIRL Katy Kat Matte Lipstick

About the Product

  • Created by Katy Perry
  • Infused with shea butter
  • Rich, moisturizing lipstick formula
  • Glides on smoothly

Q-tips: I guess this is a no-brainer (?) but I thought I would include it just in case. I use these with a bit of makeup remover on the end to correct any glaring mistakes.

My pick: Q-tip Cotton Swabs, Precision Tip

Cotton Swabs, Precision Tip

Compact mirror: Okay, so maybe THIS is my no brainer. Even though it’s liquid lipstick, if you are going out for an event or to a special dinner, you may want to bring the lipstick and a mirror along to touch up. Although my pick isn’t what I would recommend for a night at the club, I love this very much-especially the lights.

My pick: Ultra-thin Led Lighted Compact Travel Makeup Mirror

Ultra-thin Led Lighted Compact Travel Makeup Mirror

About the Product

  • Ultra-thin and portable,
  • Fits in Any Handbag or Makeup Bag for Easy Storage.
  • Adjustable Brightness- 8 Bright LED lights

Kylie Jenner was already on the right track when she packaged a lip liner and a liquid lipstick together (GOSH-I never thought I would give any of the K’s kredit for anything…..see what I did there?).

These are my tips on how to make your lipstick last longer. Now I turn to you. How do you get the most wear time out of your lipstick? What are some of your tips to make your lipstick last longer? Tell me how in the comments below.

NYFW BEAUTY ALERT: REVLON FOR MARCHESA A/W’15 Runway Show

I don’t normally post this type of thing but check this look out-I love it!

New York: Wednesday, February 18th 2015

revlon look

Make Up by Revlon Global Artistic Director,
Gucci Westman
“This look was all about a cool modern take on old Hollywood glam. Taking inspiration from the New York Great Gatsby era, I wanted to create a more youthful interpretation appearing as though she had been dancing all night. Using Revlon Illuminance Cream Shadow in Not Just Nudes and Revlon ColorStay ShadowLinks, I created a copper eye that was subtle yet elegant. As the focus of the look I created a bold dark lip using Revlon Lip Liner in Raisin with Revlon Super Lustrous in Black Cherry. For the final touch I used Revlon PhotoReady SkinLights to create a flawless luminous finish on the face and body.”

Nails by Celebrity Manicurist, Jin Soon

“Echoing a modern glam vibe, and to compliment the dark cherry lip, nails were filed in a natural oval shape and painted a deep blood red with Revlon Nail Enamel in Vixen. I wanted to highlight the focus of the face with a bold yet elegant nail.”

Hard to believe this is Revlon, but it is.  Nice, don’t you think? Would you wear this? I sure would!

What’s on my mind now….red lipstick

Fall brings along the start of many things…..shorter daylight hours, everything pumpkin, warm cozy fires, and beautiful foliage.  Fall is also when I start wearing red lipstick again. After a summer full of balms and gloss, I’m happy to dig through the lipstick drawer and pull out a nice red…..

If you’re like me and love your reds…..L’Oreal Paris has got you covered.  Check out these 3 Colour Riche Reds that I snagged during tiff at the L’Oreal Beauty Lounge.

IMG_3838

They all look delicious, don’t they…..but let’s take a peek at each one individually.

IMG_3839

This is Frieda’s Pure Red-and I have to say the first of the three that I was ‘drawn’ to….it’s a blue based red that leans pink, right up my fair skinned alley.

IMG_3840

Next up, Blake’s Pure Red….definitely more brick-ish in terms of red.  This is the type of lipstick I’d wear after having my teeth whitened.  I like this color-it’s rich and has a ‘come over here’ type vibe about it. Very sex kitten in my opinion.

IMG_3842

And finally, J. Lo’s red-what I’d term a ‘neutral’ red or ‘true’ red’ -this is neither warm or cool toned.  IT’S JUST RED. And I love it.  This red is the type of red I’d wear with a t-shirt and jeans but also put this on for drinks with the ladies.  This red will take you from day to night for sure.

So what’s your story?  Do you love to rock a red lipstick in the fall/winter like me? Or do you wear reds all year round?

Sharing the love-taking products for a test drive, office edition! L’Oreal Paris lipstick and nail polish!

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE blogging.  But what am I to do when a company as generous as L’Oreal sends me several lipsticks at a time with nailpolishes?  Do I use the lipstick and nailpolish once or twice and move on?  Will I come back to it or discover it in my collection months later and have to toss it?

Ahhhhhhh #beautybloggerproblems RIGHT?

My solution?  Pass this product on to a fabulous co-worker who has volunteered to give her thoughts/opinions about it.

In this case, meet Roselyn-she’s beautiful and the perfect guest poster for the L’Oreal Paris limited edition privee lipsticks and polishes.  She took these products for a test drive and here are her thoughts:

When I was given the #610 lipstick from Eva’s NUDE line to test, I looked it up on L’Oreal’s website to see what the deal with this new line was.

610

Here is a link to the commercial that first appeared: http://www.loreal-paris.co.uk/collection-exclusive/

In the short commercial, Eva Longoria says “it’s made for me.” I’ve been using this lipstick for about three weeks now, and I couldn’t agree more with her words. I have naturally tanned skin and dark features, usually making my selection of appropriate lipsticks to wear very minimal. I have to be careful with both colour and tone, as a lipstick just a bit different than what suits me completely changes my face (and not for the better). This #610 lipstick is a darker shade of pink. Before applying it, I put on a generic lip chap to soften my lips, followed by the lipstick. At first trial, I was shocked that this colour suited me.

The lipstick isn’t too bold, nor is it unnoticeable. It was a perfect shade of rose on my lips. I have been wearing it to work every day, which perfectly suites professional attire in an office environment. I also wear it out at night to dinner or when going out for drinks, and have been receiving a sea compliments. I usually dress in blacks and whites, but I think the lipstick can work with just about anything. As someone not usually comfortable wearing lipstick, I highly recommend this product. I love it!

I also asked Rose if she would try out Doutzen’s nude polish #600.  Now if you know me, you know that I often get my nails done ….but had a great experience with the L’Oreal ‘gel’ polish (shameless plug, read about it here).  So here’s what she thought about the polish:

600

I am a fan of dark colours when it comes my choice of clothing and accessories, which usually leaves me to depend on my shoes and nails to brighten up my look. In the winter, that isn’t always the case as ‘Linkin Park after Dark’ is a personal favorite of mine. However, in the summer I enjoy my bright pink, orange, and salmon colours.

I was given L’Oreal’s Collect privee Nude #600 nail polish three weeks ago, which was the first time that my friends and family have seen me with something other than highlighter-bright colour on my nails in the summer. This polish is a very subtle tone, but is a beautiful tint of purple and grey mixed together. From initial judgement, I decided I wasn’t going to like it. However, once I put it on, my mind was changed. The colour was a perfect tone of purple that brought a very mature edge to my outfits, especially in the workplace. It was soft enough to suggest both cute and flirty, but was by no means dull. I would consider this a year-round colour, and would definitely suggest it to anyone as the colour goes great with whatever I wear.

And there you have it!  Roselyn was not paid for this review-these are her thoughts after using both of these products for several weeks!

Stay tuned for more coworker reviews!!!! Let me know if there is anything you’d like them to review!!!

weekly recap!

Here’s what’s been rocking my world this past week!

all-in-one-bb-cream_l

The Body Shop All in one BB cream: Wow, did they change the formula on this product. I had used it long ago, and it certainly wasn’t THIS good. This is a skin adapting formula, it dispenses white, and then changes color to suit skin tone.  It provides light-medium coverage, is SO light feeling and feels so wonderful on the skin.  It’s made with natural ingredients, and the first scent I get when applying is honey.

marcelletwistupMarcelle Twist Push-Up mascara: I’ve got major love for Marcelle mascaras but this this one holds a special place in my <3.  I selected this photo so you could see that the brush contracts.  The brush in extended position is for length and in the contracted position, provides volume. The formulas on Marcelle mascaras are AMAZING and I highly recommend you get your hands on some or make friends with someone in Canada (me) that can send you some.

diorespiegleDior addict lipstick in Espiegle: I sure can’t pronounce the name of this lipstick but I do love it.  It’s such a great shade of pink, sheer on the lips and hydrating.  The only ‘down’ side is that you WILL be reapplying and reapplying this lippie.

poppy citrine blossomCoach Poppy Citrine Blossom perfume is just about the perfect blend of florals for spring transitioning into summer.  I love that it’s a light fragrance but still lasts all day. It’s heavy on the floral upon application but has a crisp finish which I adore.

dark-shadows-nyx-crimson-amulet-palette

I am so thankful for people like @jillojello who gift me fabulous items like the Crimson Amulet collection palette by NYX.  The shadows worked extremely well (with primer) but I fell hard for the blush (2nd from top).  It was just amazing!  I’m happy to have this palette and I”ll be even happier to have it for travel.  I could take this on my next trip and only need to bring a foundation! YES!

So what was rocking YOUR world this past week? Tell me in the comments below!

Weekly Recap-look, no template!

yeaaaaaaahhhhh so having a bit of an issue with my template program I use for this so I thought hey, it’s a nice day, lots of light outside AND inside, especially since we redid the skylight (would you believe the person that lived here painted the inside and perimeter of the skylight DARK brown?WHY?), so here is my very own photo of my favorite products this week!

My favorite products this past week!

My favorite products this past week!

And away we go:

Wet and Wild Comfort Zone eyeshadow palette: If you do not have this in your stash, stop what you’re doing and go get it. I consider this a STAPLE.  The colors are amazing, blend extremely well, and have great payoff. Don’t want to spend the big $$$ on NAKED palettes? Right here, my friend-wet and wild.

Jane Iredale eyeshadow trio in pecan, chocolate and argh I can’t remember: This was a gift from realgoodbadexample (youtube channel).  I have seen JI before but never purchased as they are quite pricey.  These shadows are worth it and whomever decided to put these 3 colors together is a genius.  It’s the right amount of pigment with 2 matte shades and 1 shimmer.  Soft shadows too.  This is on my ‘Check out’ list.

IT Cosmetics Vitality Disc:  I have a lot of IT Cosmetics and definitely have my favorites. This product hasn’t earned my ‘holy grail’ stamp like the Celebration Foundation has, but it’s handy, that’s for sure.  I like that everything is combined and really enjoy the blush and highlighter-color and amount of shimmer are on point! The bronzer? Not so much but I’m only attributing that to me still having my winter color (which is pure white by the way).  I will give it a whirl when I am back on my faux bronzing schedule!

Dior Ultra Addict Lipstick in 487:  You won’t see me raving about Dior products much or hardly ever anymore but I do enjoy this lipstick. Color is great for my skin tone in any season-it’s peachy-pink! Please note, Dior addict lipsticks are quite sheer-they are hydrating but not much color.  Also, they are expensive so choose wisely.  There are many many dupes at drugstore price points so do a quick Google search before you make your way to Dior.

Yardley English Lavender Moisturizing Body Lotion and Eau De Toilette: I have to say this was the shocker for me this week. I thought for SURE I was going to be giving this product or these products a negative review.  But I honestly can NOT do that.  The lotion was a HUGE surprise. It is SO moisturizing and has the right amount of fragrance. It absorbs quickly and the scent does linger but has a great finish-as does the toilette.  My only hang up is that the lotion bottle is too small. I’ve used this for just over a week and I’m already a quarter of the way through it.  I think Yardley should make a BIGGER size bottle. Honestly, with the texture, it could almost be called a cream and if they whipped it, a body butter!

So that was my week in products for you-thanks for reading and hope you enjoyed.  Let me know in the comments below if you are interested in any of these products, if you have recommendations, and heck say anything you want!

My favorites from……Revlon!

We all know Revlon’s been on ‘the scene’ for awhile now….and for me, this brand had always been around but nothing I was running after anyone for (especially after the lip butters).  However, there are several products from Revlon that I do truly adore and thought I’d mention!

IMG_3429

Revlon Colorstay whipped foundation in 200 sand beige

Revlon Colorstay whipped foundation in 200 sand beige

If you watch my YouTube channel, you’ll  know this is one of the foundations I’ve been going on about.  I absolutely love it….the finish, the texture, the application are so easy and flawless.   This foundation is a medium to full coverage, and I apply it with my Urban Decay Good Karma brush.

Revlon Photoready cream blush in flushed

Revlon Photoready cream blush in flushed

This was one of my first cream blushes. I originally bought it because I wanted to try cream blush but didn’t want to invest in a more expensive one (although I’m quite certain I bought a MAC version around the same time).  This color may look intimidating but never fear, its sheer!  I like this blush because it’s super blendable and easy to layer with other colors!

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick from L: Black Cherry, Foxy Lady

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick from L: Black Cherry, Foxy Lady

I’ll call these my ‘latest loves.’  Back in High School-and I won’t tell you what 4 years that was…..my standard lippie was “Wine with Everything” which is a color that Revlon still makes and I’d still wear.  However, I’m not sure if they have reformulated these or what but I am loving everything about these 2.  They have great payoff and are soft on the lips.  I’m definitely fall-ing for fall colors (GROAN-terrible pun).

So there you have it, my Revlon faves……I know you’ve got some of your own.  What are they?  Let me know in the comments section below.
