When I say Curves, you say…….

Yep, you read that right.

Remember my recent post? The one where I spoke on my weight, correction my STRUGGLE with my weight?  After I wrote that, I received many compliments (thank you) but I also had a lot of questions.  Especially surrounding the ‘how’-as in ‘how did you do that?’

So I have decided to post about the ‘how.’  Of course there will be more than one post-because (for me), maintaining my health requires a LOT of effort on my part.  Add to that the fact that I bore easily and …..well let’s just say you won’t be bored reading about all the things I do to make sure the numbers on the scale stay put!

So back to the topic of THIS post-let’s take a look at the title…. Curves.

In case you aren’t familiar, here’s what Curves.com has to say about their workout:

“Curves provides you with a complete cardio and strength training workout in just 30 minutes. With a system that can burn up to 500 calories and work every major muscle group, you get an efficient and effective workout every visit. It’s no wonder over 4 million women have chosen Curves to meet their health goals.”

Sounds great right? When I asked my friends/acquaintances about working out at Curves, I got responses like “Isn’t that place for old ladies?”  “You won’t get a good workout there” or “Huh?”

I had to see for myself (of course) and since when have I ever listened to anyone?

I have been working out with Curves Queen’s Park location for months now and I have to tell you, it’s quite a workout!

How does it work you say?  The circuit is made up of resistance machines that work every major muscle group, two muscles at a time.  Circuit ‘coaches’ are available to teach you how to use the machines (and correct if necessary).

Curves offers research to back up what they say-to include studies and ongoing research  at Texas A&M University.  Pretty impressive!

If I had to narrow down my favorite things about Curves and more specifically the Queens Park Location, I would have to say it’s the variety of classes offered.  In addition to  the traditional Curves circuit, they also offer Zumba classes, Boxercise, Bootcamp and (quite possibly my favorite) Bollywood dance!  Sweating is encouraged!  Nothing beats a high intensity (and fun) Zumba class followed up with some circuit training!

The staff at Queens Park is beyond amazing-incredibly attentive, and full of information.  If they see you struggling or looking confused, they are at the ready with a suggestion.  They even give you more ‘challenging’ options as well.

So who is behind Curves Queens Park? You may be surprised …….because it’s a guy.

Enter Thomas Ryan-who has quite an interesting story himself.  It starts out quite simple-youngest of five, grew up in Etobicoke.  He worked several jobs growing up.  Then….surgery #1 to repair a leg injury  he received after falling off a cliff in cottage country (yikes).  Thomas was also told that he may have to consider heart surgery for a mitral valve defect.  He was told to de-stress and left his “cushy” job.  He underwent not one, but multiple surgeries-and realized that his original plan of being off for 6 months was not possible.  Thomas’ Plan B?  A health club business-Curves.  Thomas originally entered into business with a (female) partner but is now the sole owner!  He realizes that Curves is a womans facility and has made concessions (including privacy screens and separate, specific area to perform day-to-day operations).  Although Thomas can’t be in the club ALL the time, he finds operating the club quite rewarding. He attributes a portion of the club’s success to his staff!

Thomas and Curves Queens Park Staff

So, simply put….Curves works for me.  The workout is challenging, the staff is amazing and I have different options for classes so I never get bored!  I am looking forward to trying their new program called Curves complete.

“Successful weight loss requires a complete approach that takes into account diet, exercise, and motivation. It’s like a three‐legged stool. When you have all three components, you have a solid foundation. Curves Complete is a 90‐day program that combines all three components. “

I’m anxious to get started-this program is going to be my kickstart into 2012!

This program incorporates the Curves circuit, along with a meal plan, and personal one-on-one sessions with a “Curves coach.”

How could you NOT want to work out with this group of awesome?

What’s your perception of Curves?

What do you do to maintain good health?

AHA! So THAT’s where you go!! Never been to Curves, but I’m very interested in starting a cross-training regime. Cycling has been great, but I went swimming today after a long hiatus & it was just brutal.

@helene thanks for writing and talking about your situation. Are you working out somewhere else now? What are you doing to keep yourself healthy?

I used to go to Curves about 7 years ago. I remember it being successful for a lot of people but not for me. Not because of Curves but I just didn’t have the motivation or the will power to stick with it. I wish you a lot of success and I will be curious as to how it works for you. I like that they offer other classes as well.

@missmarisol why do you think it wasn’t for you? I have heard that before just wondering about your take

I notice you didn’t mention price. Will the complete program be a different price from the regular program? As you know, I love my Planet Fitness, but I don’t think you have them up in the ‘cold’ country! Why don’t you open a franchise????

The curves complete program is an additional cost.
