Greasy to Gorgeous with Aveda! Waterless (and effortless) styling!

I feel like Aveda called me in the  nick of time.  Almost 3 weeks into a new cut and color and absolutely CLUELESS about styling a shorter ‘do.

Aveda celebrates Earth month in a BIG way.  They have all sorts of Earth month events (check here) to include special ‘salon’ days where proceeds are donated to charity, and a walk for water. There are also specially marked Aveda products that can be purchased.  In Canada, Aveda has teamed up with WaterCAN , an organization dedicated to providing sustainable water for underdeveloped countries.  In the spirit of Earth month and conserving water, I was invited to Aveda to learn about ‘water-less hair styles’ and believe me, I was all too happy to oblige.

Kristjan Hayden is the Creative Director for Aveda Canada and was styling locks all day long. I had a chance to talk to him and have him style my hair (awesome).  Here are his “waterless ways to look chic” :

Flatiron your hair straight and sleek.
As seen at: Derek Lam, Emilio Pucci, Lacoste, Marios Schwab, Micheal Kors, Saint Laurent
Wet your hair with product and slick back.
As seen at: Jason Wu, Christopher Raeburn, Giambattista Balli, Haider Ackerman
Pull your hair back and secure in a low ponytail. Use a comb to smooth any bumps before twisting your
ponytail into a bun and securing with an elastic band.
As seen at: Erdem, Givenchy, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Valentino, Versace
Sleek ponytails secured at the nape.
As seen at: Alexander Wang, Chloe, Dior, Etro
• ADD VOLUME (3 ways)
Spray volumizer in roots and blow dry. (Try: Aveda Pure Abuncance Style Prep)
Crimp roots under the part for added texture and fullness
Use Velcro rollers with Air Control hairspray. Heat and set with a blowdryer and diffuser

On my hair, Kristjan used Pure Abundance spray (my hair was dry) and a blow dryer.  He then flat iron curled my head, and braided the sides.  I LOVED IT.  Since it’s difficult to photograph yourself whilst (yes whilst) you’re getting styled, here are a few photos of my pal Jill from Batting a Lash.

What I learned:

-Hair that is ‘low maintenance’ is on trend this season-good for me, since I don’t wash everyday.

-Upstyles always work best on 2nd day hair

-crimping at the roots helps with volume (and reduces the need for excessive backcombing)

-Hair half up and braided on the sides is AWESOME.
