First Impressions-L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Superstar Red Carpet Black Flash Reflecting Mascara

Bought and paid for with my own $$$

My favorite look is what I have termed the ‘Bardot lash’-a very thick, heavy, dark lash with minimal eyeshadow.  I’m constantly on the lookout for mascaras that give me the volume, definition, curl, and length I crave.  I have accepted the fact that I need to have a ‘mascara’ routine that includes a lash primer-so I was delighted to see L’Oreal’s new mascara with the primer on one end of the mascara (mascara on the other obviously).  I picked up the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Superstar Mascara at Walmart in Red Carpet Flash Reflecting Black (say THAT 3 times fast-whoo).

Loreal packaging

From the website:

Our first Primer and Mascara for a show-stopping lash effect. Super-volumizing primer builds dramatic volume on every lash and creates an ultra smooth base to maximize mascara performance. Super-extending Mascara with a fiber-rich black formula.

Smudge-free. Removes easily with soap and water. Ophthalmologist and allergy tested. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Tested under dermatological control.

My thoughts:

Primer:  The ‘standard’ white primer-I’ll always love my Dior Lash Maximizer but this primer worked well.  Grabbed every lash and distributed the product evenly (something I hate about most lash primers-all the clumps of white stuck onto the lashes).

Formula:  Not too wet, not too dry but I wouldn’t say it was just right either.   This mascara has a curved brush, which isn’t my favorite.  It’s not exactly the same formula as the Voluminous Carbon Black (which is a cult favorite for many of us) but it’s similar.  I found the product deposited on the tip of the brush but nothing that couldn’t be solved by wiping it off (although product wasting, eeeee).  This was fairly easy to apply-I found 2 coats was enough and it didn’t weigh my lashes down. One thing I DID really like was that I was able to grab my ‘little’ lashes towards the inner corner of my eye.  I didn’t have any transfer onto my browbone (another huge plus).

Overall thoughts & observations: I went onto L’Oreal’s website and makeupalley  to see what others are thinking about this product.  It is VERY hit and miss.  Some people love it, some people are meh about it, and some do not like it.  I saw a lot of comments on the L’Oreal site about the Miss Manga, Double Extend, and Shocking Volume mascaras (the last 2 have been discontinued). Overall, mascara is a personal preference that takes into consideration formula, wand, and price.  Is this my favorite L’Oreal mascara? No, that will probably always be Voluminous Carbon black.  However, it’s not bad.  I would probably take this along on my next holiday because it’s one product versus 2 (mascara and primer).   My suggestion and ‘wish’ would include making the primer a stand-alone product.  I would definitely buy it.

Have you tried this? What do you think?
