Dessange, Dessange, Dessange…..Je t’aime (and I do not speak French)

*This post contains products sent for review.  Opinions are mine all mine-just want to tell you this was sent to  me UP FRONT*

I’m always on the lookout for a great shampoo/conditioner and on new brands.  I have to be even more careful since wearing my extensions.  I can’t use just any old something ‘off the shelf’ due to ingredients that could potentially shorten the life of my extensions.

L’Oreal Paris Canada invited me to a fabulous event to reveal their newest acquisition-Dessange.  Dessange hails from Paris and has a rich history in the hair ‘world’.  The event was nothing short of magnificent.

Let’s take a closer look at Dessange:

dessange collage

There are 4 different types within the Dessange brand-photos of respective models clockwise from top left

solar blonde

1. Solar Blonde-for natural blondes is a lightening haircare system that clarifies and lightens natural blonde hair while restoring lustre and volume.

oleo miracle

2. Oleo Miracle  offers intense nourishment and is infused with 3 natural oils: Argan ol, Camelia Oil, and Pracaxi Oil, leaving hair smooth and ultra manageable.  A high concentration of Behhenic Acid helps this collection deeply penetrate into the hair for healthier hair.

dessange-paris-california-blonde-collection

3. California Blonde-color treated blondes is inspired by the blonde bombshell look made famous by Brigitte Bardot (and created by Jacques Dessange).  This system provides moisture to the hair while highlighting the radiance.

color restore

4. Color Restore helps protect colour treated hair.  Formulated with AHA, Vitamin E, and UV filters, this collection restores hair fibers for a smooth, shiny look and helps protect vibrancy.

My thoughts:

I’ve been using the ‘California Blonde’ collection on my hair for just over 2 weeks now (but not the purple toning shampoo).    I like it-a lot.  It’s got a beautiful floral scent.  The conditioner is the right amount of moisture, hydration and the elixir is perfect for my ends.  I appreciate that Dessange separated his blondes…..natural blondes have different needs than ‘bottle’ blondes!  There really and truly is something for everyone in the line and when you use these products, you will have salon results.  It’s not your typical drugstore shampoo & conditioner (not that there is anything wrong with that).

This collection will be available (in Canada) exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart. All products are between $12.99-$14.99 CAD.

Keep your hair nourished-with Live-Clean Age Resist Miracle Nutrition Oil

*I was sent this product for review*

Since I’m a blonde again, I feel as if all is right with the world.

Unfortunately, being a blonde comes with some less than stellar things….one of which is extremely dry ends.  I’m the person who takes ‘good’ care of their hair too-deep conditioning treatments, only washing 3 days a week, using a UV protectant on my hair. So I’m adding something new to my routine.

age resist miracle nutrition oil

LiveClean Age Resist Miracle Nutrition Oil to the rescue!  It’s a dual layer oil that’s used as a pre-shampoo tratment.  It contains Rosehip, Avocado and Jojoba Oils to smooth hair and make it more manageable.  Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein attaches to the hair shaft, increasing sheen, lustre and density of each hair strand, causing hair to appear thicker and fuller. LiveClean products are 99% plant derived, paraben, phthalate and Phosphate-free.

I’ll take it!

This product has a suggested retail of $11.99 CAD and is 100ml. You can find it at most mass retailers.

Stay tuned for an additional blog post on 2 other oils from liveclean!

Fiorio Salon & Spa

1470 Yonge Street, Toronto

fiorio

What they’re about:  Hair, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing

Okay so this place is where I went on a complete whim after several months of DIY hair disasters (think Pinterest NAILED IT MEMES-yes that was me).  Samantha had me in dozens of foils in under an hour and I walked out of that salon a blonde.  I haven’t looked back since.

My haircut, also 2-thumbs up-was quick and efficient.

Please note-Fiorio has colorists and stylists….so if you do go there, you will always be seeing at least 2 people.  Also, one thing I loved is the attentiveness of ALL staff.  You won’t be sitting under the dryer forgotten at Fiorio and your beverage glass will always be filled promptly.

THE FACIAL OF THE MOMENT-Oh, I can not say enough about Sandra Thompson at Fiorio for facials.  Skill, experience, great bedside manner, and a fantastic product line (Phytomer).  My skin was assessed, thoroughly cleaned and nourished in 60 minutes. No blotches, no broken capillaries…..FANTASTIC.   I didn’t have to worry about a greasy scalp or oily looking face.  I enjoyed an amazing hand massage on top of that.  Super impressed by this aesthetician.  Can’t say enough good things about her……purchased the 12H Flash Gel at Sandra’s suggestion and haven’t looked back.

Fiorio has a beautiful retail section-I highly recommend it!

Prices at Fiorio are fair and comparable to the area.  Check out their website for services offered and prices!

Like I said, stay tuned for an in-depth look at my experiences at each of my work neighborhood spots!

I wanted to like you, Vidal Sassoon Color Finity Dry Shampoo #beautyunited

This product was sent to me courtesy of #beautyunited

*Please note-currently, this story does not have a happy ending!*

I am a dry shampoo SUPER FAN.  I haven’t washed my hair daily in almost 10 years-I do a lot of coloring & heat styling. I rely on products like dry shampoo, especially after my workouts.  Some are better than others….but almost all of the ones I’ve tried are better than this one.

Here’s the product info:

dry shampoo

VS Colorfinity Dry Shampoo Spray cleanses without washing and refreshes the look of your blonde colored hair – all in 1 step! Our formula with lightweight refreshers was developed by VS color experts and helps eliminate unwanted oils from hair, without washing out color pigments – leaving no excess residue.

So my problem isn’t with the formula.  I used it, it has a pleasant scent and absorbs oil quite well.  I didn’t get a white cast either.

So what’s the issue you’re saying by now, right?

Well, I was able to use this product a total of once.  After using it the first time, the pump jammed.  I tried every trick in the book to unclog it, and it still won’t budge. On top of that, it must have leaked because when I shake the container, it feels like there is approximately 1/3 of the product remaining.  YIKES.

So unfortunately, I can’t recommend this product since I was only able to use it once.  If anyone has any tips as to how I can un-clog this, I’m open to them!

Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser #influenster #voxbox

I was selected by Influenster to sample their mystery voxbox….3 products with a L’Oreal label and no idea what brand they were actually from.

I tried to guess what the brand was and enjoyed using the products….a shampoo, conditioner, and serum for split ends….but I wasn’t able to guess the brand until a follow up box of FULL SIZE products was sent several weeks later!

It was Garnier…and I have to say I certainly enjoyed using these products.  Since I’ve had my hair short, I haven’t felt the need to mask it,  but if I decide to give myself a Saturday night treat, this will be it.  All of the products smell great and work well.  I especially like the shampoo.  It lathers quickly and rinses clean.

Thank you Influenster for selecting me to participate! I enjoyed the products!

My so called life-Adventures in……hair modeling

Haircare & maintenance can be costly-especially if you desire, healthy, shiny, glossy hair. I won’t admit or divulge how much my hair “costs” a year but be advised, it’s a 4 digit number.  EXPENSIVE.  Since my financial situation has changed, I’ve been searching out new ways to have the hair I want at a lower price point.  Easy? No.  Possible? YES.

I’m no supermodel….well, at least not yet.  Believe me, I’m working on it!  But have you ever heard of hair modeling?  Hair modeling is a service offered by salons or hair academies/schools/institutes (often trendy ones!) that offer a complimentary or reduced price service (or services). You offer up your head for several hours, and get a hair service! Sounds good, right?

Is hair modeling for you?  Maybe….I suggest that you be an open-minded  individual.  Hair modeling isn’t necessarily for someone who wants a trim.  This type of opportunity is for someone who is willing to change-whether it be an edgy style or a color change.  Sometimes, an educator will use a hair model in front of salon staff to demonstrate new colour/cutting/styling techniques so if you’re shy, hair modeling may (also) not be for you.

I stumbled upon an opportunity at worldSALON in Toronto!

WorldSalon_220x150

From worldSALON website:

worldSALON is an award-winning beauty hot spot which has been heralded as one of Canada’s top salons, frequented by the cognoscenti of the business, film and television communities.  worldSALON is the only salon in North America to use solar panels to heat the water. Our green achievements include: Award from Greenest City, certificate of achievement from the Ontario Power Authority, and the Green Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship. We are also a producer of the unique plant-based multi-use skin and hair care line, worldPRODUCTS.

I met with Marc (the educator) from La Biosthetique Canada on a snowy afternoon to come up with a ‘plan.’  This was to be done over 2 days-color was done in advance due to time allotment for training/education.  We had a great conversation and he told me a little about the line (which I had never heard of-shocking, yes?).  Stay tuned for a future post about products…..this salon has products that are very different from any other salon  to include the owner’s own creations (Brian Phillips).

I left the salon with a fresh color and actually started getting a bit anxious about the “cut” portion.  The color looked so wonderful-why do I need a cut, I thought.

The next day came and off I went to worldSALON.  There was a chair in the middle of the salon and then 5 other chairs arranged in a U-shape around this chair.  I took my spot in the chair and away we went! Here was my view:

The beautiful people of worldSALON!

The beautiful people of worldSALON!

I thought, well now is a great time to learn about hair cutting and styling…..and my takeaway from that was….

There really needs to be  a “Thank a stylist day” -so much for me listening.  The educator started speaking and it went right over my head.  I consider myself a fairly savvy, educated individual but after listening (and being a participant in that demonstration), I KNOW NOTHING.  I wish I could show you the guides that the educator had given out to the staff….they had all sorts of shapes, and color combinations.  He was speaking of where, how, and why he was applying color in particular places on my head.  I always thought it was “foil and go”-how wrong I was! It was NASA level formulas/informations, in fact I was surprised it wasn’t stamped “CLASSIFIED”

the amazing Marc the educator!

the amazing Marc the educator!

So while he was cutting away, I went off to my happy place 🙂

What I’m trying to say here is I had NO idea that level of complex information was required to cut and style my hair.  Incredible.  And the staff sat there and observed it all, asking questions.  The educator himself asked questions at the end of the demonstration and the staff were quick to answer.  I thought, “I can not believe they retained that” -because I had no idea what the educator was saying.  I only knew that my hair felt and looked wonderful! As Marc was finishing up, more hair models arrived as the staff was now going to practice what they had just learned…..so absorbing this information was key!  Here’s a link to worldSALON’s facebook page so you can see for yourself!

Saying goodbye to the fried, split ends that made up my 'old' style!

Saying goodbye to the fried, split ends that made up my ‘old’ style!

I won’t get into worldSALON much here, but I will be posting separately about the salon as it is worthy of it’s own post! They carry lines/brands of hair products that I had never heard of before going there!  I also want to update on my hair and something I noticed right away about the color! Thank you to Marc Riese of La Biosthetique, Brian Phillips of worldSALON, and the staff of worldSALON for allowing me to participate, I’m very happy!  Special shout outs to Emily for reading my email!!

So, would you hair model?  Why or why not? Tell me in the comments section below!

L’Oreal EverSleek Precious Oil Treatment-yes please!

I’ve been making drastic changes to my hair for as long as I can remember. From blonde to red to auburn to chocolate brown, I have put my hair through the ringer.  So I wasn’t at all surprised when I went to see a stylist (for a wedding I was to attend) and she replied, “Wow, why is your hair so dry? I can’t even pull the brush through it.” Was that comment snarky? Yes.  Was it completely unwarranted? No. When I returned home that night, I dove into my bathroom hair closet (yes I have several shelves devoted to hair products) for some immediate intervention.

Suprisingly enough, I hadn’t even opened this product. I have had several horrific experiences at salons who would pile on the Moroccan oil, and several hours later, my locks were limp and greasy. No thank you.  However, I knew that this was an intervention and it was time to get serious about restoring my hair’s lustre.

IMG_3495

From the box:

EverSleek Precious Oil Treatment is a luxurious cocktail with precious Argan Oil from Morocco, and Sunflower Oil.  It instantly infuses hair to condition and seal in salon-smoothness.  This ultra-silky formula immediately absorbs into hair without feeling greasy or heavy so hair flows with movement.  Supremely sleek, purely luminous and 100% frizz defiant.  Perfect for all hair types.

Instructions:

Apply 1-2 pumps evenly through damp hair.  Avoid the roots. Do not rinse.  Style as usual.   Apply 1 pump on dry hair to add shine.

How I use it:

I use this oil on dry hair at night AND in the morning. I use 1-2 pumps at night the night before I wash my hair and use it on my ends in the morning.  I find it a lot lighter and easier to work with than Moroccan Oil.  While it IS possible to overdo it with this oil, following the instructions should keep you in the clear.

Results:

I’ve been using this for several weeks in addition to giving my hair a treatment twice a week.  Honestly, I’m not sure when my hair has felt better (of course I mean when I style it-it is usually awesome when I leave the salon after having a professional treatment/style).  I do like it-the texture, the fragrance (which is light but it IS there) and the results.  It’s less expensive than Moroccan oil but yields fantastsic results!

Overall, I do recommend this product.  It’s helped bring my hair back to life!
